Our stone work

Stone work we take on.

Natural stone and flagstone need a mason who understands base, drainage and weight. We build and repair stone work that stays put through Toronto winters.

Flagstone patios and walkways

Flat-laid flagstone on a compacted base with proper drainage so it does not heave or hold water.

Stone steps and porches

Steps and porch landings built solid, with the right rise, run and drainage for safety and longevity.

Retaining and garden walls

Walls that hold back soil and look good doing it, with drainage behind the stone so pressure does not build.

Stone veneer on homes and chimneys

Natural and manufactured stone veneer installed with proper lath, drainage and details at openings.

Re-setting settled or heaving stone

Stone that has moved can often be lifted, re-levelled and re-set on a better base instead of replaced.

Repairs to cracked or loose stonework

We fix cracked caps, loose stones and failed joints with the right mortar and proper bedding.

Full stone service

Laid on a base that lasts.

Stone is only as good as what is underneath it. We excavate, compact and drain every job so the stone stays level and the joints stay tight.

The craft

Why stone work fails, and how we get it right.

Most stone repairs happen because the original base or drainage was wrong. We fix what is underneath first.

01

A bad base

Stone laid on soil heaves every winter. We build a proper compacted base so the stone stays level and the joints stay tight.

02

No drainage

Water with nowhere to go lifts and cracks stone. We grade and drain the job so water moves away, not under, the stone.

03

Weak joints

Wrong mortar and thin beds fail fast. We set stone on a solid bed with the right joint so it can flex slightly without cracking.

Stone FAQ

Straight answers before you call.

Flagstone or pavers, which is better?+
Flagstone is natural, unique and looks great on older homes, but it costs more and takes a skilled hand to lay flat. Pavers are uniform, easier to install and often less expensive. We can walk you through which makes sense for your yard and budget.
How much does a flagstone patio cost?+
It depends on the size, the stone, the base preparation and access. A small patio is modest; a large, irregular flagstone patio with a full excavation is more. We give a clear, itemised estimate for free after we measure and look at the site.
Does flagstone crack in Toronto winters?+
Not if it is laid right. Flagstone on a compacted, draining base with proper joints can handle freeze-thaw. Stone on soil or with no drainage will heave and crack. The base is the job.
Can you repair or re-set my existing stone?+
Usually, yes. If the stone is good but the base has failed, we can lift it, fix the base and re-set the same stone. It is often the most cost-effective way to get a level, lasting surface.
Natural stone or manufactured, what do you use?+
We use both. Natural stone has character and lasts generations. Manufactured stone is lighter, more uniform and works well for veneers and some walls. We will recommend the right material for the job and your budget.
When is the best time to build in stone?+
Spring through fall. The ground needs to be workable, and mortared work needs dry, above-freezing conditions to cure. We can plan now and schedule when the weather is right.
